Abstract

A plastic-elastic binding-material adapted for use in the manufacture of road surfaces, floors, tiles and the like comprises a slightly coloured clear tar distillation product and/or colophony to which is added chlorinated rubber in amount up to 30 per cent of the other ingredients. Instead of colophony, a colophony ester or colophony hardened by zinc or lime may be employed. Suitable tar distillation products are coumarone resins, phenanthrene oils, anthracene oils, indene, and naphthalene. A bitumen obtained as a residue in the purification of aliphatic hydrocarbon mixtures may be added in amount up to 25 per cent of other ingredients. 10-40 per cent of a vegetable or animal oil such as linseed-oil stand-oil, together with a small proportion of an anti-oxidizing agent such as b -naphthol may also be added. Pigments or dyes may be added. The chlorinated rubber may be dissolved in the other constituents or may be added as a solution. The binding-material may be used as prepared or as an aqueous emulsion.
