Abstract

274,017. Buitenhuis, A. J. July 10, 1926, [Convention date]. Waterproofing; proofing processes; proofing- compositions.-A process for waterproofing building materials, walls, cellars &c. consists in first applying to the surfaces thereof a solution containing a substantial amount of resin such as colophony and then a solution containing a substantial amount of a hydrocarbon of high molecular weight such as paraffin wax, the solvents in the solutions being of different nature. A 50 per cent solution of colophony in methylated spirit and a 33 per cent solution of paraffin wax in benzol, or in a mixture of petrol and benzol, may be used, or solutions of 50 per cent colophony in benzol and 33 per cent paraffin wax in carbon bisulphide or in a mixture of carbon bisulphide and benzol. A small quantity, up to 8 per cent, of hydrocarbon of high molecular weight such as paraffin wax, mineral jelly or lubricating oil may be added to the resin solution, and a quantity up to 10 per cent of resin may be added to the wax solution. In an example, 30 to 50 lbs. of colophony, 2 to 4 lbs of paraffin wax and 1 lb. of mineral jelly dissolved in 13.2 gallons of methylated spirit and 6.8 gallons of benzol is used for the first solution, and 30 lbs of paraffin wax and three lbs of colophony dissolved in a mixture of 4.6 gallons of petrol and 2.3 gallons of benzol for the second solution. An alternative second solution consists of 32 lbs of paraffin wax dissolved in 10 gallons of carbon bisulphide or in 5 gallons of carbon bisulphide and 5 gallons of benzol.
