Abstract

An antirust coating composition comprises an antirust pigment such as a lead, iron or chromium pigment or an insoluble metal borate, or a metal phosphate, mixed in an aqueous bitumen dispersion prepared by means of insoluble humic acid, or lignic acid, or an insoluble salt of either of these acids. By preparing the emulsion without emulsifying agents which bind water, viz. soaps, alkalies, or clay, the water in the emulsion can evaporate completely after the coating is applied. The emulsion may be prepared from petroleum pitch, coal-tar pitch, prepared tar (a mixture of anthracene oil and pitch), brown-coal tar, coal-tar, &c., and linseed oil, varnish, &c. may be added. When hard bitumen is used, a little solvent may be added. Pigments specified are red oxide of iron, red lead, chrome green, brown oxide of iron, white lead. In the example, petroleum pitch is emulsified in water with finely ground brown coal rich in humic acid, and the emulsion is mixed with red oxide of iron.
