471,502. Waterproofing ground. TRAVAUX SOUTERRAINS. Dec. 2, 1935, No. 33402. Void. Convention date, June 22. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXI] Coherent strata, such as sandstone through which bituminous or like substances in suspension would not percolate, are rendered waterproof by driving into the ground injection tubes 2 so that their lower ends are situated in a predetermined plane and spaced apart a distance such that when liquids such as washing water or bituminous suspensions are forced under pressure into the tubes fissures develop between the ends of the tubes and the obturating suspension may be forced through the fissures to provide a substantially continuous waterproof layer 3. In triassic or tertiary sandstone the pressure used is 20 kg. per sq. cm., the minimum depth of the layer 2 metres and the distance apart of the tubes 4 to 5 metres. Washing water is first injected, then an alkaline solution such as sodium carbonate, then the bitumen emulsion with or without an electrolyte. The operations are repeated successively in the various boreholes.
