Abstract

To prevent premature consolidation of a road-making composition the bituminous binder is mixed with a portion of the sand to produce a mix having excess binder, the remainder of the sand is then added and the ingredients are remixed for 3 or 4 minutes. Films of binder are then formed between coated and uncoated particles, and this binder becomes effective only when the mixture is compressed or rolled. The first mixture may be made hot or cold using either molten bitumen, fluid or semi-fluid bitumen, or a bituminous emulsion. The second portion of sand is added cold. The sand may be replaced by other mineral matter of similar dimensions. The compositions may be mixed with an aggregate pre-coated with bitumen.
