Abstract
A porous friable material such as coke, porous stone, crushed brick, &c. is added to a hot-mix bituminous road-making composition to absorb excess binder so that the composition is manipulable on cooling. The binder is subsequently released by the crushing of the absorbent material after the composition has been laid. Preferably the absorbent is added to the sand or fine portion of the aggregate and this mixture is treated with bitumen; the coarse aggregate is separately coated with binder, and the two components are finally mixed together. The absorbent may, however, be added to the aggregate before the binder. Cold sand may also be added to the hot mix to assist in the absorption or concealment of the binder. The proportion of binder may be 4-12 per cent of the total composition and that of absorbent 2-8 per cent. The invention is not restricted to compositions containing coarse aggregate but extends also to sand and like mixes for surface dressings. The use of quarry fines as a substistute for sand is mentioned.
