Abstract
268,411. Levy, F. Dec. 3, 1925. Emulsions, making.-An aqueous bituminous emulsion is produced by mixing together molten bituminous material and a hot aqueous solution of an alkali silicate, emulsification being effected without the addition of any fatty or other saponifiable matter. In one example, Mexican asphalt, melted at a temperature of 215-225‹ F., is added slowly to a hot two per cent solution of sodium silicate powder in water, agitation of the mixture being continued until emulsification has been effected. In another example, a solution containing 1.4 grams of sodium silicate in 196 c.cs. of water is heated to 185‹ F. and Mexican asphalt at approximately the same temperature is run in slowly, agitation being continued until the emulsification has been effected. The process may be carried out continuously. Specification 3914/08, [Class 91, Oils &c.], is referred to.
