Abstract
Asphalt and tar emulsions are prepared by the use as emulsifying or stabilizing agents of lecithin, particularly soya-bean lecithin, or other phosphatides or phosphatide-containing materials such as the bye-products obtained in the purification of lecithin for nutrient and like purposes. Any oil contained in the agents used may be saponified with ammonia, inorganic alkali, or an organic base. Other emulsifying agents such as salts, fatty acids, or sulpho acids may be employed in addition. Examples: (1) 100 kgs. of Mexican asphalt at 180 DEG C. are poured with stirring into 100 kgs. of water, at 80-90 DEG C., containing 4 kgs. of phosphatides; (2) 3 kgs. of soya-bean sludge are added to an emulsion prepared by stirring a molten mixture of 20 kgs. of asphalt and 30 kgs. of resin into 80 kgs. of boiling water; (3) 0,5-1 per cent of liquid ammonia, caustic soda, or triethanolamine may be added to the emulsions of (1) or (2), or to the phosphatides employed in making them; (4) 5 per cent of Turkey-red oil is added to the emulsions of (1) or (2); (5) an emulsifying and stabilizing agent employable in emulsifying asphalt comprises an aqueous solution containing 0,8 per cent of phosphatides and 0,4 per cent of caustic soda.
