Abstract

In a method of producing an emulsion of molten asphalt by adding a portion of molten asphalt to a hot caustic alkaline solution, then introducing saponifiable material and finally adding the remainder of the asphalt, all with agitation, a small quantity of colloidal clay such as bentonite may be added as a stabilizer at any stage in the process. The amount of alkali used is preferably less than 1 per cent of the total mass; the amount of saponifiable material less than 1 per cent and the amount of colloidal clay between 0,15 and 5 per cent, but preferably less than 2 per cent. According to an example, 1,75 kgm. caustic soda (about 0,25 per cent of the total mass) is dissolved in about 350 kgm. water at about 95 DEG C. About 3,5 kgm. of colloidal clay are mixed with water to form a slurry and then incorporated in the alkaline mass. A small portion of heated asphalt (total mass 300-400 kgm.) is then added with agitation, p and then the emulsifying agent, e.g. 1 kgm. of oleic acid (about 0,14 per cent of the total mass) is added. Finally the remainder of the asphalt is added and the agitation continued until emulsification is completed.
