Abstract

Fatty oils containing a large proportion of gums are de-gummed by treating the oil with a 5 to 25 per cent soap solution. The soap entrains the gums into the aqueous phase which is separated off, e.g. in a centrifuge. The treatment is preferably carried out at a temperature of 70 DEG to 95 DEG C. so as to avoid emulsification and to reduce the viscosity of the mixture. Emulsification may also be avoided by using a soap solution containing an electrolyte, such as sodium sulphate, sodium chloride or soda. Either a ready soap solution may be added to the crude oil or the soap solution may be formed in the oil itself by adding alkali lye to it which reacts with the free fatty acids and thereby produces soap. In the latter case the lye is of 0.1 to 0.5 normal strength, which produces a soap solution of the specified strength. In using a ready soap solution, there may be used the soap obtained in refining fatty oils with lye after suitable dilution with water. Fatty oils treated may comprise soya oil, peanut oil, and particularly hot-pressed linseed oil. The soaps specified comprise palm oil soap, linseed oil soap, and coconut oil soap.
