Abstract

The colouring matter, Gossypol, is separated from cotton oils or from the by-products of their refinement with alkali, by treating the oil or acidified by-product with a metal borate that in aqueous solution is acid to phenol-phthalein, or with a mixture of a metal borate having an alkaline reaction and of a substance repressing alkaline hydrolysis in aqueous solution. Sodium decaborate alone, and alkali borate or magnesium borate acidified with boric acid or mixed with neutral metal salt, e.g. sodium chloride or with a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerol and mannitol are suitable reagents.ALSO:Cotton oils and the fatty acids in the by-products of their refinement are decolorized by treatment with a metal borate which in aqueous solution is acid to phenol-phthalein, or with a mixture of a metal borate giving an alkaline reaction and of a substance repressing alkaline hydrolysis in aqueous solution. Sodium decaborate, alone, and alkali borate or magnesium borate acidified with boric acid or mixed with neutral metal salt or with glycerol, mannitol, or other polyhydric alcohol are suitable reagents. In an example, 1,000 lb. of crude cotton oil are agitated at 60 DEG C. with a solution of 10 lb. of sodium decaborate and 10 lb. of sodium chloride in 100 lb. of water, or with 100 lb. of an aqueous solution containing 5 lb. of borax, 5 lb. of boric acid, and 10 lb. of sodium chloride or magnesium chloride; after settling the oil is drawn off and the aqueous layer centrifuged. The purified oils may be further refined with caustic soda. Soap stock and black grease obtained in the usual refining of cotton oils are either (1) treated with excess of boric acid, preferably at 100 DEG C., separated from the aqueous layer, if necessary diluted with petroleum, trichlorethylene, or other solvent of oils, and centrifuged; or (2) acidified at 65 DEG C. or below with sulphuric acid, preferably in presence of sodium sulphite or other reducing agent, separated from the aqueous layer, if necessary diluted with solvent, treated with acid borate solution, and centrifuged. The colouring matter, Gossypol, may be used in place of logwood, cutch, fustic, and the like.
