Abstract
Mineral oils are freed from dark-coloured substances by treating with soap and alkali, separating from the sludge by centrifuging, filtration, or decantation, and finally washing with water if necessary. The soap may be formed in the oil from fatty oils, fatty acids, or other saponifiable substances. Salts, such as benzoates, acetates, ethyl-sulphonates, phthalates, m or p amino-benzene-sulphonates, a or b naphthaline-sulphonates, or sodium or potassium or magnesium chloride or sulphate or phosphate, may also be added. In an example 1 kilogram of turbine oil is mixed at 25-30 DEG C. with grams of crude naphthenic acid, 10 cc. of a 25 per cent solution of sodium benzoate, and 10 cc. of sodium hydrate of 38 DEG B<\>ae., and allowed to stand for a day. The oils may be first purified by other methods, e.g. by sulphuric acid, or fuller's earth or bleaching clay. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 9179/94, 16134/01, and 26198/04.
