Abstract

280,969. Klapproth, W. Nov. 22, 1927. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 23, 1927]. Lactic acid is purified by extraction with a solvent such as ether or a higher alcohol in the presence of a strong acid and excess of a salt of the strong acid; for instance sulphuric phosphoric, or oxalic acid and a salt of such acid. In an example 1000 parts of raw acid is treated with 80 parts of concentrated sulphuric acid and 120 parts dry sodium sulphate and is extracted with ether. The extract is washed with concentrated solution of a neutral or acid lactate, for instance of sodium, calcium or barium, and the lactic acid extract is then freed from ether which is used again. The lactic acid may be freed from colouring matter by decolorizing charcoal. If the raw acid is inferior and a very pure product is required, the acid obtained as above is mixed with 5-10 per cent of concentrated sulphuric acid and heated to 80-100‹ to destroy impurities. Sodium sulphate is then added and the extraction with ether is again effected as described above. A prior process is referred to in which the raw acid is first converted into a salt, for instance a calcium, zinc, or magnesium salt, the salt is recrystallized, tha acid liberated and freed from heavy metals such a; iron, lead and copper by precipitation treat. ments after which the sulphuric acid present is carefully neutralized and the lactic acid extracted with ether or other suitable agent.
