Abstract
Impurities, especially carbon, are removed from used mineral oils e.g. crank-case lubricating oil, by heating them to 180 DEG F., mixing therewith a saponifiable oil or fatty acid, preferably oleic acid, and then saponifying the latter by the addition of alkali, thus forming a counter colloid which takes up the colloidal impurities. Sodium chloride or sulphate may be added as an anti-emulsifying agent. The purified oil is separated by centrifugal force or by gravitation. If the used oil contains gasoline, it is removed by blowing steam through the oil.
