RUSSELL GEORGE PELLY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO TECHNICAL RESEARCH WORKS, LIMITED, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
LUBRICANT AND PROCESSOR PREPARING SAME.
No Drawing.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL GEORGE PELLY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of London, England, have invented acertain new and useful Lubricant and Process of Preparing Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved process for increasing the lubricating properties of oils. Admixtures of saponifiable oils, fats or waxes with mineral hydrocarbon oils (compounded oils) have been employed as lubricants to a large extent, it bein Well known that mineral hydrocarbon oil s are not so efiicient for use as lubricants in many cases as saponifiable oils, fats or waxes of animal or vegetable origin.
For the purpose of carrying out my invention I add to mineral oils or to saponifiable oils, fats, or waxes derivatives of aliphatic polyhydric alcohols or phenols in which the hydroxyl groups are partially replaced by fatty and/or other acid radicles, for example the monoglycerides of such fatty acids as oleic or lauric acid, which results in the production of a lubricating oil of greater efiiciency and by the selection of substances bf the nature mentioned valuable properties, such as the stiffening of the consistency and the emulsification with aqueous liquids may be imparted to saponifiable or mineral oils.
For example I have found that the addition of five per cent of monoor diglyceride of oleic acid to an ordinary mineral lubrieating oil reduces the c'o-eflicient of friction Application filed September 29, 1922. Serial No. 591,420.
and improves its emulsifying property in water. 7
The compounds which have been found to give the best results in my invention are the monoand diglycerid'es of the common fatty acids (for example, oleic, lauric or stearic acids); in other words, a polyhydric alco- 1. That method of increasing the lubricating properties of oils which consists in adding to said oils the derivatives of aliphatic polyhydric alcohols formed by partially repliicing the hydroxyl groups by acid radica s.
2. A composition of matter consisting of lubricating oil and aliphatic polyhydric a1- cohols of which the. hydrox 1 groups are partially replaced by acid ra icals, substantially as described.
3. A composition of matter consisting of lubricating oils and aliphatic polyhydric alcoholsof which one (OH) group is partially replaced by an acid radical formin a monoglyceride, substantially as describe In testimon whereof I aflix my si ature.
