540,095. 4-Sulphophthalic acid esters. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. April 1, 1940, Nos. 5811 and 5812. Convention dates, April 4, 1939, and March 4, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] 4-Sulphophthalic acid and substitution products thereof are esterified on one carboxyl group with 2-ethyl-butanol and on the other carboxyl group with an alcohol containing at least four carbon atoms. Suitable alcohols mentioned include butyl-, isobutyl-, amyl-, n-hexyl-alcohols, 2-ethylbutanol-(1), methyl propyl carbin-carbinol, 2-ethyl-hexanol-(1), methylcyclohexanol, and decyl-, dodecyl-, hexadecyl-, octadecyl-alcohols. Instead of the free acid there may be used the corresponding anhydrides, acid halides, and esters. In the. latter case a re-esterification takes place. A salt of the sulphonic acid may also be used. In this case a slightly higher temperature is employed and promoters such as gaseous hydrochloric acid or concentrated sulphuric acid may be present. The esterification is also assisted by removal of water from the re-action mixture in any known manner and particularly with the assistance of a substance which forms an azeotropic mixture with water such as benzene or toluene. The esterification may also be conducted under pressure. In examples : (1) Phthalic acid is sulphonated with sulphur trioxide and the product so obtained is esterified, in the presence of sulphuric acid first with 2-ethylhexanol and then with 2-ethylbutanol to give a colourless solid mass which is a good framing agent. (2) 4-Sulphophthalic anhydride is treated with 2-ethyl-butanol-(1), and the product neutralized with caustic soda. (3) As in example (2) using a lower esterification temperature. The products of the invention are useful as wetting agents and may be used alone or in combination with solubility improvers such as urea or sodium cymene sulphonate, or soaps, protective colloids, dressing agents, weighting agents, softening agents or matting agents. In particular in admixture with fat solvents such as pine oil, methyl-cyclohexanol, or tetrahydronaphthalene products with a good wetting action are obtained. Specification 481,346 is referred to.
