Feb. 22, 1927. ,A'-(7ihydro-1: 2: 1<1>: 2<1>-anthraquinoneazine is obtained by caustic alkali fusion of 2-aminoanthraquinone, with or without the employment uf oxidizing agents, in the presence of a salt of a 1cwel' fatty acid containing not more than three atoms of carbon in the molecule in conjunction with the, salt of a higher fatty acids containing not than four carbon atoms in the molecale, or a water-soluble compounds of high molecular weight possessing wetting-out properties, or an aleolmlate or phenolate. The alkali metal salts of diisopropylnaphtlalene sulphonic acid or of bile acid, turkey red oil, the satta of the acids ohrairned by the sulphonation of brown-coal tar and th,e. lils.e and sulphite cellulose pitch are specified as wetting-nut agents. A caustic potashsoda melt is preferably employed, to which may bo added, for example, sodium acetate in conjrnction with potassium phenolate, sodium glyce;'a<e. sodium amyla;;e. potassium butyrate, potassium isobutyrate, potassium valerate or soap. In an example, 2-a,:ninoanthraqu)none is treated in a caustic potash-soda melt containing dehydrated sodium acetate and sodium giycerate, or potassium isobutyrate.
