Abstract

Products stated to have wetting, foaming, cleansing and emulsifying properties are prepared by the following methods: (1) a soluble salt of a 1 : 2-dihydroxypropane sulphonic acid is condensed with a fatty acid containing at least six carbon atoms, or (2) a soluble salt of 1-halogen-2-hydroxypropane-2-sulphonic acid is condensed with a fatty acid salt containing at least six carbon atoms. The soluble salts of the propane sulphonic acids mentioned are the alkali metal, ammonium, alkaline earth metal and heavy metal salts and also the basic organic salts. In examples: (1) sodium 1 : 2-dihydroxypropane-3-sulphonate is refluxed with coconut fatty acids and the resulting ester purified with alcohol; (2) the sodium salt of 1-chlor-2-hydroxypropane-3-sulphonic acid, prepared by treating glycerol with chlorine and replacing one of the chlorines by means of sodium sulphite, is condensed with a sodium soap obtained from tallow; (3) a triethanolammonium salt, prepared by reacting 1 : 3-dichlorhydrin with triethanolammonium sulphite is condensed with commercial sodium stearate. Specification 372,005 is referred to.ALSO:Products stated to have emulsifying properties are prepared by the following methods: (1) a soluble salt of a 1 : 2-dihydroxypropane sulphonic acid is condensed with a fatty acid containing at least six carbon atoms, or (2) a soluble salt of 1-halogen-2-hydroxypropane-3-sulphonic acid is condensed with a fatty acid salt containing at least six carbon atoms. The soluble salts of the propane sulphonic acids mentioned are the alkali metal, ammonium, alkaline earth metal and heavy metal salts and also the basic organic salts.
