Abstract

The sulphonic acid salt of an ester of a saturated fatty acid and a monohydric alcohol used in the parent case in admixture with a fatty alcohol sulphate or an alkyl benzene sulphonate is partially or wholly replaced by a sulphonic acid salt of an ester of a sulpho fatty acid containing 10 to 24 carbon atoms having the sulphonic acid group on the fatty acid radical with a dihydric to hexahydric alcohol having 2 to 6 carbon atoms or a sugar. The alcohols used include glycerine, diglycerines, glycols, polyglycols, erythritol, pentaerythritol, mannitol and sorbitol. The ester may contain free hydroxyl groups and at least one-third of the fatty acid residues are sulphonated. A preferred ester is derived from fatty acids of which at least 50% by weight contain 16 to 18 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. hydrogenated animal or vegetable fats. Preferably the total synthetic surface-active substance of the sulphate or sulphonate type consists of 20 to 90% by weight of the above esters which, when present in admixture together, consist of 20 to 80%, by weight of the admixture of the dito hexahydric ester. The cations in the above salts may be Na, K, or mono-, di- or triethanolamine. Other additives include alkali metal carbonates, bicarbonates, silicates, phosphates, perborates, percarbonates, persulphates, perphosphates, and sodium or magnesium sulphates; boric acid, citric, oxalic, lactic, glycollic, tartaric and aminosulphonic acids; polymeric carboxylic acids, glue, gelatine, and salts of ethercarboxylic acids or ethersulphonic acids or acid sulphuric acid esters of cellulose and starch; fatty acid amides substituted on the nitrogen atom by C1-C6 alkyl or alkylol groups which may be further substituted by ethylene oxide; alkanolamine; toluene or xylene sulphonates; water-soluble polyethers and polyglycols. The compositions may be in paste or liquid form.
