Abstract

An aqueous metal-working lubricant composition comprises (1) 0.5 to 15% by weight of a water-soluble dialkali metal salt of an a -monochloro - C1-4 - alkylphosphonic acid, (2) 0.5 to 15% by weight of a free alkanolamine (e.g. diethanolamine, butanolamine), (3) 0.5 to 15% by weight of a water-soluble copolymeric polyoxyalkylene glycol or a monoester or monoether thereof, and (4) 0.05 to 1.5% by weight of an alkanolamine salt of a C12-20 saturated or unsaturated fatty acid, the remainder being substantially water, and having a pH between 8 and 11. The desired pH is obtained by using a slight excess of alkali metal hydroxide in preparing the phosphonate salts. The composition may be put in the form of a concentrate to be diluted with water to give the above proportions. Minor amounts (0.01 to 1% by weight) of other ingredients may be present, e.g. silicones, phosphate esters, alkali metal polyphosphates, acetaldehyde, essential oils, phenols, phenates and mercapto-benzthiazoles, some examples of these being given.
