Abstract

A lubricant and coolant for use in metal-working is an aqueous solution comprising (a) a major proportion of water, (b) 0.2-10% wt. of an alkali metal nitrite and (c) 0.02-1% wt. of a substance of formula: <FORM:0853221/III/1> wherein R is a C6-C18 alkyl group, M is an alkali metal and n is an integer from 1 to 4, the weight ratio of (b) to (c) lying between 1:1 and 11:1. The solution may also contain surface active agents, dyes, perfumes, bactericides, sequestering agents and defoaming agents. Surface active agents mentioned are polyglycols, their ethers and esters, polyoxyethylene-substituted fatty acid amides and partial esters of sorbitol anhydrides or polyoxyethylene derivatives of such partial esters. In the examples, metal-working fluids are described which are aqueous solutions of sodium nitrite, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate and a polyglycol derived from ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. The effect of omitting ingredient (b) or (c), or replacing it by borax, is described.
