Abstract
Solid, semi-solid and bland, high-boiling, substantially non-aqueous fluid pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions for the local treatment and/or prophylaxis of bacterial and/or fungal infections comprise non-toxic, pharmaceutical excipients and one or more 1 : 2-benzisothiazolone derivatives of general formula <FORM:0861379/VI/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having not more than 3 carbon atoms, the benzyl, phenyl, or nitrophenyl radical, and R represents hydrogen; or, R is hydrogen and R1 is chlorine. Specific examples of such compounds given are: 2-benzyl-1 : 2-benzisothiazolone, 2 - methyl - 1 : 2 - benzisothiazolone and 5-chloro-1 : 2-benzisothiazolone. The compositions may be in known pharmaceutical forms suitable for local application: e.g. gels, creams, gauzes which may be shaped, e.g., into tampons, powders, e.g. for insufflation, pessaries, suppositories, solution tablets, solutions and suspensions in non-aqueous media. Numerous examples of suitable excipients are given including gelling agents, humectants, buffers, bland fluids, e.g. mineral and vegetable oils, waxes and greases, emulsifying, surface-active, disintegrating and effervescing agents, lubricants, binders and diluents. The proportion of active ingredient may be from 0.005 to 50% by weight, the range 0.005 to 10% being generally preferred. Other agents of known p therapeutic activity may be present, in particular anti-protozoal agents, other known antibacterial and/or fungicidal agents.
