Abstract

Detergent compositions having a depressed sudsing action and a resistance to caking comprise by weight of the composition (a) 4-40% of a water-soluble alkali metal detergent salt of an organic sulphuric reaction product having in the molecule a C8-18-alkyl radical and a sulphonic or sulphuric acid ester radical; (b) at least an equal weight of alkali metal polyphosphate; and (c) as a suds depressant mixture (i) 1-10% of at least two, preferably at least three, C14-31-saturated fatty acids of different chain length or the alkali metal soaps thereof, or mixtures of such acids and soaps, at least 50% having at least 16 carbon atoms in the molecule, and (ii) 1-10% of the reaction product of 45 moles of propylene oxide with 1 mole butanol having a molecular weight of about 2650 and a viscosity of about 1905 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. and being present in an amount sufficient to inhibit caking. Suitable detergents (a) include sodium and potassium tallow or coconut alkyl sulphates or C9-15-alkyl benzene sulphonates, sodium alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates and coconut fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates and sodium tallow or coconut-alkyl triethenoxy ether sulphate. Polyphosphate (b) generally comprises 30-80% of the composition and is preferably sodium tripolyphosphate. Suitable fatty acid mixtures (c) (i) are those derived from hydrogenated marine oil which contain at least 5% of fatty acids containing 20 or more carbon atoms, a preferred mixture comprising 5-15% myristic acid, 25-35% palmitic acid, 15-30% stearic acid, 15-30% arachidic acid and 10-20% behenic acid. Sodium carbonate, sulphate and silicate (Na2O : SiO2=1 : 2), carboxymethylcellulose, colour, fluorescent dye and perfume may also be incorporated, and the composition is produced in powder form.
