Abstract
A process of making a high-density spray-dried detergent composition from a homogeneous fluid slurry, initially containing entrained air, comprising (a) 40-60 per cent of water, (b) 10-40 per cent, preferably 15-20 per cent, of at least one alkali metal salt of a detergent anionic organic sulphuric reaction product having an alkyl group of 8-22 carbon atoms; (c) 5-25 per cent, preferably 15-20 per cent, of sodium sulphate, the weight ratio of (b) to (c) being in the range of 7-1; and (d) 5-15 per cent, preferably 6-12 per cent, of sodium silicate having a ratio SiO2 : Na2O of 3-1, preferably 1.5-2.0, comprises adding to the slurry at least one non-ionic compound; (e) containing polyoxyalkylene ether groupings and having a molecular weight of 800-11,000, generally in an amount of 1-4 per cent, whereupon the slurry separates into two phases, then agitating the slurry to liberate entrained air, and spray-drying the product. (All percentages are based on the final slurry obtained. Component (b) may suitably be the sodium salts of alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, of fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates or sulphonates, or of the sulphate esters of the reaction product of fatty alcohols with ethylene oxide, but is preferably a sodium or potassium salt of an alkylbenzene sulphonate in which the alkyl group has 9-15 carbon atoms (suitably tetrapropylene), or of a hydrogenated tallow alcohol sulphate, or a mixture of both. Components (b) and (c) are generally present in approximately equal proportions. Component (e) may be an ethylene oxide condensate with polypropylene glycol, with an alkylphenol in which the alkyl group has 6-12 carbon atoms, with the reaction product of an excess of propylene oxide and ethylene diamine, or with an aliphatic alcohol having 8-18 carbon atoms. After the entrained air has been liberated, but before spray-drying, alkali metal tripolyphosphate may be added to the slurry with the minimum incorporation of air. Carboxymethylcellulose, commercial mixtures of fatty acids, tarnish inhibitors, fluorescent brightening agents, perfume, colour, and sodium carbonate may also be incorporated before spray-drying.
