Abstract

1,053,064. Detergent compositions. MONSANTO CO. May 22, 1964 [May 24, 1963], No. 21225/64. Heading C5D. Dry free-flowing dish-washing compositions comprise an intimate mixture of (A) solid particles containing 10-25% by weight of water as water of hydration and consisting of (i) a hydrated alkali metal tripolyphosphate and (ii) anhydrous or partially hydrated alkali metal silicate, and (B) 0À5-3% by weight of the composition, of a solid particulate compound containing available chlorine of which at least 90% will be retained on a 100-mesh U.S.S. screen. (A) (i) generally consists of sodium tripolyphosphate hexahydrate, and (A) (ii) of a sodium silicate wherein the ratio SiO 2 : Na 2 O is 4: 1 to 1: 2 and more preferably 3À75-1À6: 1; there is usually also present (A)(iii) an organic surface active agent such as sodium alkyl sulphate, alkylnaphthalene sulphonate, abietene sulphonates, C 8-24 -alkylbenzene sulphonates, or dioctyl sulphosuccinate, but it is preferred to use non-ionic agents such as the alkanolamides of fatty acids or of abietic acid, or the condensates of C 2-4 -alkylene oxides with alcohols, fatty acids, sterols, glycerides, amines, mercaptans, polypropylene glycol or tall oil, and especially the ethylene oxide condensate with polypropylene glycol or with an alkylphenol. In general, (i) comprises 45-65%, preferably 50-60%, (ii) comprises 54À9-30%, preferably 47-39%, and (iii) comprises 0À1-5%, preferably 3-1%, by weight of species (A), and suitably consists of particles of such size that at least 90% thereof are retained on a 100-mesh U.S.S. screen; the particles of both (A) and (B) are, however, such that substantially all pass a 20-mesh U.S.S. screen. (B) may consist of a chlorinated trisodium phosphate, N-chlorinated alkylaryl or aryl sulphonamides or N-chlorinated triazines such as melamine, ammelide, ammeline or cyanuric acid, anhydrous potassium dichloroisocyanurate in the crystalline form which has an internal monoclinic and an external triclinic symmetry being particularly favoured. The compositions normally have a bulk density of at least 0À6 g./c.c.. and usually of 0À75- 0À95 g./c.c.
