Abstract

A solid detergent composition comprises (a) a water soluble C8-15alkyl mono-nuclear aryl sulphonate, and (b) polyvinyl alcohol having a viscosity of 1,8-3 cps. (measured as a 4% aqueous solution at 20 DEG C.) containing 10-30% by weight of polyvinyl acetate. (a) generally comprises 5-50% of the composition and preferably contains 12-15 carbon atoms in the alkyl group while the mono-nuclear aryl group may be a toluene, xylene or phenol nucleus although benzene is preferred; the cation present may be ammonium, mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine, or isopropanolamine, but sodium and potassium are preferred. A cellulosic compound, e.g. a carboxyalkyl cellulose, a cellulose sulphate, or an alkyl or hydroxyalkylcellulose, but most suitably sodium carboxymethylcellulose with a degree of substitution of 0,5-0,7, is preferably also included, in which case the total of cellulosic compound and polyvinyl compounds is 0,1-2% of the total solids and are present in a ratio of 20:1 to 1:20; in general however, both the cellulosic compounds (if present) and the polyvinyl compounds are present to the extent of 0,05-5%. 10-80% of such alkaline builder salts as the alkali metal pyro-, tripoly-, tetrapoly- and hexameta-phosphates, silicates (M2O:SiO2=1:1 to 1:4), borax and sodium carbonate are usually also present. Fatty acid mono- and di-ethanolamides and isopropanolamides, sodium sulphate, fatty alcohols, xylene or toluene sulphonates, alkyl sulphates and alkyl polyether sulphates, alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, alkylarylpolyglycol ether sulphates, ethylene oxide condensates with fatty alcohols, alkylphenols and polypropylene glycol, fluorescent dye, colour, corrosion inhibitors, bleaching agents, foam stabilizers or inhibitors, and detergency improvers may also be incorporated. The composition is suitably prepared by heat treating a slurry of the ingredients at 100 DEG -200 DEG F. for less than 3 hours, after which the mixture is spray-, roll-, or drum-dried at above 212 DEG F. to a moisture content (if spray dried) of 3-15%. If preferred, the slurry is made up with only so much water as is necessary to hydrate the hydratable salts present, when a dry solidified mass is obtained upon aging which may then be granulated. In general, the composition may be produced as beads, granules, flake, chips and powders.
