Abstract

A detergent composition comprises a mixture of ingredients which evolve carbon dioxide in a heated aqueous solution and are such that the solution has a pH not above 7.5 at any temperature below 40 DEG C., a pH not below 8.5 at any temperature above 70 DEG C., and a pH below 7 and/or above 10 at the lower and/or higher temperatures respectively in the range 30-100 DEG C. Three preferred embodiments are these in which the solution has (a) a pH below 7 at any temperature below 40 DEG C. and a pH of 8.5-10 at any temperature between 70-100 DEG C.; (b) a pH of 7-7.5 at any temperature in range 30-40 DEG C. and a pH above 10 at 100 DEG C.; and (c) a pH below 7 at any temperature below 40 DEG C. and above 10 at 100 DEG C. The pH control is achieved by the incorporation of such acids and acid salts (including hydrolysable salts of strong acids and weak bases) as adipic, tartaric, citric, oxalic, phthalic or sulphamic acid, sodium or potassium bisulphate, disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, potassium binoxalate, aluminium sulphate or urea nitrate, either with an alkali metal bicarbonate per se or with a substance, such as sodium carbonate, in such quantities that in solution it forms bicarbonate in the presence of the acids or acid salts. Detergents which may be present in the mixture include sodium dodecyl, hexadecyl and cetyl sulphates, sodium alkyl sulphonates and sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. Phosphates, polyphosphates, sodium sulphate, cellulose glycollate and sodium perborate may also be incorporated. The compositions are suitably made by adding either the acid/acid salt or the bicarbonate/carbonate to an aqueous solution or paste of the composition which is then dried, the other ingredient being thereafter added.
