Abstract
1286878 Fatty acids by neutralizing aqueous soapstocks ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 7 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60166/69 Heading C2C Free fatty acids are prepared by forming a solution of a mineral acid or of soapstock in an aqueous diluent stream and either consecutively or concurrently mixing the said solution with soapstock or a mineral acid respectively, allowing the mixture to separate into an aqueous layer and a fatty acid layer, removing the aqueous layer and recycling a portion of it as the aqueous diluent stream. The mixing is suitably carried out in a double Venturi. The mineral acid is suitably 96% w./w. sulphuric acid and the process is preferably carried out at a temperature of from 40 to 80 C. The initial soapstock is suitably a by-product of glyceride oil refining and contains an aryl or alkylphenyl sulphonate salt comprising not more than 3 alkyl groups having in total not more than 4 carbon atoms.
