Abstract

1,198,727. Refining fatty oils. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 8 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 52065/67. Heading C5C. Fatty oils containing free unsaturated fatty acids and having iodine values of at least 45 are refined by treating with an aqueous alkaline solution in the presence of a hydrotrope which is a strong aqueous solution of a phenyl or an alkylphenyl sulphonate salt having up to 3 alkyl substituents, whose total number of carbon atoms is not more than 4, the molar proportion of sulphonate salt to free acid content of the crude oil being from 2 : 1 to 1 : 1 The treatment is preferably effected at 40- 80‹ C. using sodium xylene sulphonate of concentration 35-60% by wt. based on the total amount of water. The alkaline solution may be NaOH or Na 2 CO 3 . The process gives rise to an upper oil layer, a lower aqueous layer and an intermediate aqueous layer containing a complex comprising a soap, a sulphonate salt and water. The oil layer after removal of the aq. layers may be treated with or further quantity of sulphonate salt. The aqueous layers may be acidified with a mineral acid and the mixture allowed to separate into a fatty acid layer and an aqueous hydrotrope layer, which may be recovered.
