Abstract
A-vitamins are added to an oil or oils such as animal, fish, or vegetable oils, or edible mineral oils, for example liquid paraffin, or fatty oils which are solid at ordinary temperatures, by agitating the oils with an aqueous solution of a soap formed from a marine animal oil or oils containing A-vitamins, and then separating the oils from the soap solution. The treatment is preferably effected with exclusion of air. A small quantity of a fat solvent, such as benzine, may be added to the soap solution previous to the treatment. After separation from the soap solution, common salt may be added to the oil to cause the clear oil to separate out and flow to the top. The oil may then be further deodorized, for example by means of superheated steam. The oil, if suitable, may subseqpently be hardened by hydrogenation. Oils containing A-vitamins, or to which the vitamins have been added by the above process, may be employed in the extraction so that their vitamin content may be raised to any desired degree. In an example, cod liver oil is saponified with caustic soda and dissolved in water. The soap solution obtained is agitated with earth-nut oil for about ten hours with exclusion of air and the oil then separated and purified.
