Abstract

1391906 Fatty acids ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 26 May l972 [28 April 1971] l1936/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Fatty acids are recovered from glyceride oils by mixing the oil with an aqueous alkaline solution comprising from 1 to 160% by weight on the water of a polyhydric alcohol and from 5 to 30% by weight on the same basis of an alkalimetal, alkaline-earth-metal or ammonium salt of benzenesulphonic acid or of an alkylbenzenesulphonic acid, so forming a two-phase system and separating the aqueous layer, containing fatty acids as soap from the oily layer. The Specification includes lists of suitable oils, alkalies, polyhydric alcohols and sulphonates. The aqueous layer, after separation, is acidified, e.g. by sulphuric acid, using the apparatus of Specification 1,286,878, and the free fatty acids recovered.
