Abstract

1,270,952. Separation of fatty acids and esters. KBAFTCO CORP. 9 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 18096/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Mixtures of fatty acids and/or esters (above 10 C) are separated by cooling the fluid mixture in the presence of a lower boiling and immiscible fluid by subjecting the mixture and fluid to reduced pressure to evaporate the fluid, adding an aqueous solution of a surface active material to form an emulsion and separating the mixture into liquid and solid phases. Vegetable or animal fats e.g. tallow fatty acids or cottonseed oil may be treated and need not be completely melted. The fluid, e.g. water, may be introduced before the reduction of pressure or after and a temperature drop of from 25‹ to 120‹ F. per hour by the evaporation is desirable. The aqueous solution of surface active material, e.g. alkylphenolpolyglycol ether, alkylsulphonate, fatty alcohol sulphate and alkylbenzyl sulphonate, optionally with inert electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium, aluminium or other soluble metal salts, is added to the liquid phase and an emulsion is formed which is then separated by conventional methods such as decantation, filtration or by centrifuging.
