Abstract

A relatively unsaturated fraction is extracted from a mixture p of fatty acids free from oxidized fatty acids by contacting the mixture at room temperature with a two-phase solvent comprising a hydrocarbon solvent and a polar solvent immiscible therewith, separating the solvent layers, and eliminating the solvents from the fatty acids dissolved therein. In examples, linseed oil fatty acids are treated respectively with furfural, furfuryl alcohol, and ethylene glycol diacetate in the presence of petroleum ether. The final separation of the fatty acids from the solvents may be effected by the addition of water. Tables are given to assist in determining whether any particular polar solvent will be immiscible with the hydrocarbon solvent.
