Abstract

Oxirane-containing fatty acid esters with from 10 to 22 carbon atoms, are separated into high-oxirane content and low-oxirane content fractions by solvent extraction. The solvent may be one that selectively dissolves either the high-oxirane compounds e.g. methanol, acetonitrile, acrylonitrile, acetone nitro methane, -ethane or -propane, and dimethyl sulphoxide or the less highly substituted compounds e.g. liquid, at. and unsaturated hydrocarbons such as ligroin and pat. ether. Epoxidized glycerides include epoxidized tallow, soybean, linseed, tall, safflower, perilla, sperm, menhaden and cottonseed oils and the methyl ethyl, propyl and octyl esters are also mentioned. Examples describe the separation of epoxidized linseed oils, and epoxidized soybean oils of differing oxirane content.
