Abstract

An electrical insulating oil comprises a mixture of a highly refined mineral oil and a proportion not greater than 50 per cent. by weight of the finished oil of a highly aromatic extract phase from the solvent refining of mineral oils, which extract has been itself separately refined and has a viscosity-gravity constant greater than 0.920. An extract phase which has been refined by treatment with sulphuric acid and an adsorbent earth with or without lime is preferably used. Extracts exemplified comprise the portions of a spindle oil distillate which are soluble in liquid sulphur dioxide at 10 DEG C. and at 0 DEG C. respectively. An example of a highly refined mineral oil comprises a spindle oil made by conventional acid and clay refining of a suitable distillate. Specification 589,150 and U.S.A.
