Abstract

Paper size consists of an aqueous dispersion of fortified rosin (i.e. rosin reacted with a ,b -unsaturated acids such as maleic acid or derivatives thereof, e.g. anhydrides or nitriles; and containing 5-75% of adduct, the remainder being unchanged rosin) admixed with a fatty acid, fatty acid mixture from natural oils or fats, and/or a naphthenic acid, the mixture having a drop point below 110 DEG C. Preferred fatty acids have 12-24 carbon atoms in the chain. In Example 1, Mexican gum rosin is reacted with maleic anhydride and mixed with varying proportions of fatty acids or naphthenic acid. Example 2 is similar but uses a mixture of maleic anhydride and dehydrated citric acid. In Example 3, the rosin is mixed with sulphuric acid-refined tall oil having 40% fatty acid content, before being reacted with maleic anhydride. Specifications 335,902 and 859,787 are referred to.
