Abstract

1439116 Modified rosin dispersion HERCULES Inc 1 Aug 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 34087/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division D2] An aqueous dispersion comprises, by weight: 5-60% fortified rosin (A); 0À5-10% watersoluble cationic dispersing agent (B) being a resin derived from epichlorohydrin and (a) polyaminopolyamide, (b) alkylenepolyamine, or (c) poly-(diallylamine); and (C) water to 100%. (A) is made by reacting rosin with α-# saturated acids, e.g. maleic, acrylic, itaconic, itaconic, or citraconic acids, or their anhydrides. (A) may also comprise rosin and/or an extender, e.g. paraffin, microcrystalline wax, or terpene or petroleum hydrocarbon resin. The dispersion is made by dissolving (A), and the extender and rosin, if present, in, e.g. benzene, xylene, chloroform, or 1,2-dichloropropane. This solution is then mixed with an aqueous solution of (B): (i) to form an unstable emulsion, in which the (A) solution forms the disperse phase, followed by subjection to shear in a homogenizer, yielding a stable emulsion; or (ii) to form a stable water-in-oil emulsion which is then inverted by rapid addition of water with vigorous stirring. After either (i) or (ii), the organic solvent is removed, e.g. by distillation, yielding the required dispersion. Preparations of (A) and (B) are described. Use.-Paper size.
