Abstract

1354436 Vinylacetate copolymer/alkyd resin aqueous dispersions FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 21 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 7938/72 Heading C3P A polymer dispersion is derived from 100 parts by wt. of an aqueous dispersion of (a) a copolymer of vinylacetate and a vinyl ester of a branched monocarbocylic acid and/or (b) a copolymer as in (a) with additionally an acrylic acid ester and/or (c) a copolymer of vinylacetate and a maleic acid ester, having a solids content of 45-60%, and from 25-10 parts by wt. of an alkyd resin emulsion, the weight ratio of solid addition polymer to solid alkyd resin being from 75 : 25 to 90 : 10, together with a stabilizer. The stabilizer is preferably a 5-2% high and/or low viscosity aqueous solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose, present in an amount of from 8-20 parts by weight. A defoamer may also be present. The alkyd emulsion is preferably one which is prepared from 70 parts by wt. of a long chain alkyd resin having a fatty acid content of more than 80%, 10-40 parts by wt. of water and a combination of 0À5-2 parts by wt. of cone. ammonia and from 1-3 parts by wt. of a water soluble surfactant, preferably a polyglycol ether. The dispension may be prepared by adding an alkyd emulsion to the addition polymer dispersion which has already been mixed with the stabilizer. In the examples the addition polymer is a vinyl acetate/vinyl Versatate (Trade Mark) copolymer, and the alkyd is a terephthalic acid/ soya alkyd resin. Pigments and other additives may be added to form paints.
