Abstract

1,128,085. Polyalkylene imine compositions. MONSANTO CO. 21 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 47289/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Divisions D1 and D2] A sizing composition comprises: (a) a (C 8-30 alkyl) acrylate or a (C 8-30 alkyl) propiolate and (b) a polyalkyleneimine or a poly-N-methylalkyleneimine or a water-soluble derivative of either of these imines. The alkylene groups in the poly-imines preferably each contain 2 or 3 carbons. The weight ratio of (a) : (b) is preferably 1 : 10 to 10 : 1. The sizing composition may be provided in the form of an emulsion or in solution in an organic solvent. The examples specify the use of quaternary ammonium halides in aqueous solution as emulsifying agents and suitable organic solvents include xylene or dimethylbenzyl alcohol. Aqueous paper pulps optionally containing alum are treated with the sizing composition and made into paper sheets.
