Abstract

1346426 Incorporating adjurants into photographic colloids AGFA-GEVAERT 9 July 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39116/70 Heading G2C Adjurants such as colour couplers, maskforming compounds, filter or antihalation dyes, u/v-absorbers and optical brightening agents are incorporated into photographic colloid coating compositions by dispersing a solution of the adjurant in the coating composition, or by dispersing the said solution in water or in an aqueous colloid solution which is then mixed with the coating composition, the dispersing being carried out in the presence of an alcohol or ethoxylated derivative thereof of the formula: - where n is 0 or 1; m is 0 to 30; R 3 is H or when n is 1 may be alkyl; each of R 1 and R 2 is a straight or branched chain alkyl group or R 1 and R 2 together form an alicyclic ring structure, R 1 and R 2 together containing at least 5 carbons. The adjurant solution may be a solution of the adjurant in the said alcohol or ethoxylated derivative, or other solvents may be present such as volatile water-immiscible organic solvents or mixtures of such solvents with water-soluble organic solvents. The dispersing is preferably conducted in the presence of a dispersing or emulsifying agent such as sodium isodecyl sulphate, sodium isodecyloxypropyl sulphonate, sodium hexadecyl sulphate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate or sodium 2-butyl-n-octyl oxypropyl sulphonate. Alcohols and ethoxylated derivatives of the above formula include isooctadecyl alcohol, isohexadecyl alcohol, 2-nbutyl-n-octyl alcohol, hydroabietyl alcohol and various ethoxylated secondary alcohols.
