[Also in Division C2] Acylated alkanolamines having general formula where R represents a linear or branched alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, n is not more than 6, X and Y are independently hydrogen or an alkyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or the group where R, X, Y and n are as above, and R<SP>11</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched acyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms, are used as solvents for introducing colour forming couplers, ultraviolet absorbers or other chemical adjuvants into silver halide photographic emulsions. The solution of the coupler, for example, in the solvent, is emulsified in a homogenizer or colloid mill with water, which may contain a waterpermeable hydrophilic colloid of the type employed in producing photographic emulsions e.g. gelatine, P.V.A., or agar-agar, and possibly also a surfactant and an emulsifier. The dispersion obtained is then introduced into a silver halide photographic emulsion. If required, a known solvent can be added to the solvents of the present invention to change the physical properties of the dispersion. In the examples given, certain couplers were dissolved in the acylated alkanolamine solvents by application of heat. In some cases ethyl acetate was used as co-solvent. The hot solution was then poured into a 4% gelatine solution containing a small amount of sodium tetradecyl sulphate. The mixture was emulsified in a homogenizer, and introduced into a silver halide photographic emulsion.
