Abstract

791,353. Colour photography. KODAK, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 35055/55. Class 98(2) A colour coupler is incorporated in a gelatino silver halide emulsion by dissolving it 'in a low-boiling water-insoluble organic solvent, dispersing the solution in aqueous gelatin solution, removing substantially all organic solvent from the resulting dispersion, separatety dispersing in aqueous gelatin solution an oil former as defined in Specification 541,589 and then mixing the two dispersions with a gelatino silver halide emulsion to form a dispersion in the emulsion of liquid particles of the coupler and organic crystalloidal material. The dispersions have a low ratio of crystalloidal material to coupler. The low-boiling solvent may be nitromethane; nitroethane; methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl acetate; ethyl or butyl formate; or low-boiling water-insoluble solvent as described in Specification 791,219. The crystalloidal material may be di-n-butyl phthalate or any of the oil-formers described in Specifications 541,589 or 791,219. A number of suitable couplers are specified. In Example 1, an ethyl acetate solution of 1 - (2<SP>1</SP> : 4<SP>1</SP>: 6<SP>1</SP> - trichlorophenyl) - 3 - [3<SP>11</SP> - (2<SP>111</SP> : 4<SP>111</SP> - di - tert. - amylphenoxyacetamido) - benzamido] - 5 - pyrazolone is added to an aqueous solution of gelatin containing Alkanol B, the mixture is passed through a colloid mill 4 times, chilled, shredded, and dried on a stainless steel screen. Di-nbutyl phthalate is added to an aqueous solution of gelatin containing Alkanol B, and the mixture is passed through a colloid mill and filtered through a silk screen. The dried coupler dispersion is added to water containing saponin and, after soaking, the mixture is heated to 40‹C, the di - n - butyl phthalate dispersion is added, and the resulting mixture is added to a gelatino silver halide emulsion which is then coated and dried. In example 2, the procedure is similar using as the coupler 2 - (a - 2<SP>1</SP> : 41 - di - tert. - amylphenoxybutyrylamino) - 4 : 6 dichloro - 5 - methylphenol and, in place of the di - n - butyl phthalate, tri - o - cresyl phosphate (in ethyl acetate solution). In Example 3, the procedure is similar using as coupler N - (4 - benzoylacetaminobenzene sulphonyl) : N - (γ - phenyl - n - propyl) - p - toluidine (in methylisobutylcarbinol) and, in place of the di - n - butvl phthalate ethyl sebacate.
