Abstract

844,865. Photographic colour materials. KODAK Ltd. Dec. 21, 1956 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 38987/56. Class 98(2) A water-insoluble colour coupler containing at least one acid group is incorporated into a photographic organic hydrophilic colloid by dissolving the coupler in an organic liquid which is completely miscible with water, adding water to the resulting solution in the presence of a dispersing agent so as to precipitate the coupler as a dispersion, removing the organic liquid from the resulting dispersion and then mixing it with the hydrophilic colloid. The organic liquid may be acetone, methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide or dioxane and the hydrophilic colloid may be gelatin or the phthalic anhydride gelatin of Specification 649,544. The dispersing agent, if oil-soluble, may be added as a solution in an organic solvent to the coupler solution before water is added, or if watersoluble, may be included in the water which is added. In the examples, a 1 % acetone solution of Alkaterge-C (e.g. a condensate of 2-amino-2- methyl-1; 3-pentane-diol with oleic acid) is added to the coupler solution before the water is added, and in some cases also the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid (aerosol OT) is mixed with the water to be added. Packets may be prepared by adding a gelatino-silver halide emulsion to the dispersion of. coupler in the hydrophilic colloid and then adding the ammonium salt of styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer alone and stirring, or adding also a copolymer of methyl a-methacrylate and methacrylic acid and stirring (see Specification 711,488). Examples are given of the preparation of such packet emulsions and of the mixing of such packet emulsions containing different colour couplers. The colour couplers may be the resin couplers described in Specification 767,028 or the couplers of Specification 733,119 or U.S.A. Specification 2,688,544. Specification 541,589 also is referred to.
