Abstract

1346425 Incorporating adjurants into photographic colloids AGFA-GEVAERT 9 July 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39115/70 Heading G2C Adjurants, such as colour couplers, maskforming compounds, filter and antihalation or sensitizing dyes, u/v-absorbers and optical brightening agents, are incorporated into photographic colloid coating compositions by dispersing a solution of the adjurant in the coating composition, or by dispersing the said solution into an aqueous colloid solution which is then mixed with the said coating composition, the dispersing being carried out in the presence of a surface-active agent of the formula: where n is 0 or 1; m is 0 to 30; R 3 is H or when n is 1 may be alkyl; each of R 1 and R 2 is a straight or branched chain alkyl group or, provided n = 1, R 1 , and R 2 together form an alicyclic ring structure, R 1 and R 2 together containing at least 8 carbons; and Z is SO 3 M, OSO 3 M, OCOXSO 3 M or -Y-ASO 3 M, where M is H, alkali-metal, ammonium or organic ammonium, X is alkylene, aralkylene or arylene, Y is -O- or -S- and A is alkylene, substituted alkylene or aralkylene. The surfaceactive agent may be present in the adjurant solution or in the colloid. The solvent for the adjurant may be a water-immiscible volatile solvent or a mixture thereof with a water-soluble solvent. High-boiling, water-immiscible oily solvents may also be present. Surface-active agents of the above formula include sodium isohexadecyl sulphate, sodium isooctadecyl sulphate sodium hydroabietyl sulphate and sodium 3-isooctadecyloxy-propyl sulphonate.
