Abstract

1,254,471. Cyanine dyes. AGFA-GEVAERT A.G. 24 Feb., 1969 [24 Feb., 1968], No. 9678/69. Heading C4P. [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Cyanine dyes of formula where X is S, Se, O or -CH = CH-, n is 1-100, R<SP>1</SP> is substituted or unsubstituted oxyethylene or 1,2-oxypropylene, R<SP>11</SP> is an optionally substituted saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group and R<SP>111</SP> is (a) a monomethine group substituted with a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring containing nitrogen as ring member; or (b) a trimethine chain which carries in the mesoposition an alkyl group, having up to 5 carbon atoms and which carries in the terminal position a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring containing nitrogen as ring member; or (c) a pentamethine or heptamethine chain which carries in the terminal position a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring containing nitrogen as ring member and which may be substituted with alkyl having up to 5 carbon atoms, while the three carbon atoms in 2-, 3- and 4-position or in 4-, 5- and 6- position of the said pentamethine or heptamethine chain together with a 2,2-dimethyltrimethylene bridge may form a 4,4-dimethylcyclohexene ring; or (d) a dimethine or tetramethine chain which carries in the terminal position one of the cyclic ketomethylene radicals customarily used in cyanine dye chemistry and which may be substituted with alkyl or alkoxy having up to 5 carbon atoms; or (e) one of the cyclic ketomethylene radicals customarily used in cyanine dye chemistry are prepared by reacting an appropriate alkylene oxide with the corresponding hydroxy compounds of formula or from compounds of formula where R is, for example, alkyl or alkylthio by methods conventional in cyanine dye chemistry.
