Abstract

Transparently embossed paper consists of fibrillated uncollapsed fibres containing at least 80% wt. bound polyacrylonitrile. The fibres can be formed from a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and ethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain acid groups e.g. sulphoric acid groups. Alternatively polyacrylonitrile fibres may be mixed with up to 20% wt. of regenerated cellulose fibres. The paper is embossed at 190-240 DEG C. The paper may be coloured with dyestuffs, e.g. of the triphenyl-methane, Astrazon or phthalocyanine type before embossing. The counter-roller used during embossing may be made of rubber, cotton or paper. The paper can be used for lampshades, wall panels, curtaining or blinds.
