Abstract

1,171,382. Paper. INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO. 2 Jan., 1967, No. 66/67. Heading D2B. A base sheet for a strippable wall covering comprises cellulosic fibres filled with a pigment and saturated with a cured self-reactive vinyl acrylic terpolymer latex. A preferred terpolymer is composed of 65-85% butyl acrylate, 15-35% vinyl acetate and 1-10% of a selfreactive co-monomer. The base sheet is made by saturating with the latex a partially dried sheet containing cellulosic fibres filled with pigment, and drying. A curing aid such as ammonium chloride may be added, as well as a filler retention agent, e.g. a mixture of a melamine-formaldehyde resin and a methylated methylol-melamine resin. The cellulose fibres may be obtained from bleached cellulose pulps or reclaimed waste polyethylene-coated paper. They may contain up to 50% of synthetic fibres such as rayon, nylon, polyacrylonitrile or polyethylene terephthalate. Titanium dioxide is a suitable pigment. The preferred terpolymer latex is applied at the size press stage of a paper mill in the form of an aqueous dispersion containing anionic or non- ionic surfactants. It is cured by baking at 130‹C for 3-4 minutes with oxalic or citric acid (or ammonium salt thereof) as catalyst.
