Abstract

1,264,506. Coated paper. NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP. 22 April, 1969 [7 May, 1968], No. 20500/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D2] A paper product is coated on at least one surface with a sizing agent comprising the dried residue of an aqueous dispersion of a cationic derivative of an amylose product containing at least 50% by wt of amylose, the dried residue containing at least 50% by wt of the cationic derivative. The sizing agent may be applied to paper or paperboard as an aqueous dispersion containing 2-20% by wt solids. The cationic derivative may be a substituted ester or a substituted ether, the substituents being primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary amine groups, sulphonium groups or phosphonium groups. The preferred derivative is a tertiary amino-alkyl ether. The paper sized may be of cellulosic or regenerated cellulosic fibres, or of synthetic organic fibres. Pigments, dyes, fillers and rosins may be present in the paper, and conventional starch and resin sizes may be used in conjunction with the present sizing agents, up to a maximum of 50% of the dispersed solids.
