Abstract

An aqueous size for surface-sizing paper comprises starch, e.g potato starch, and/or a starch derivative, e.g. potato starch made partly cold-swellable in an edge-runner mill, oxidized starch, white dextrin obtained from potato starch or potato starch converted by alpha amylase or esterified with acetic anhydride, part of which is ungelatinized and/or undissolved. The size may also comprise kaolin, kaolin mixed with chalk, sodium hexametaphosphate and a dispersed binder such as casein, animal glue, a mucilage, a natural gum, carboxymethyl cellulose, a latex, an acrylic ester polymer, an acrylic ester-vinyl derivative copolymer and a urea-formaldehyde condensate.
