Abstract

A method of preparing coated paper that has a high gloss and is very thick, characterized by the stages consisting of: a) glue a sheet of paper; b) applying to the surface of at least one side of the glued paper sheet an aqueous surface coating composition having a total solids content of between 60 and 70% by weight, the solids including a pigment of the type used for paper coating, a thermoplastic binder present in an amount of about 10-20% based on dry weight, and an anti-adhesive agent; c) transporting the coated sheet to the entrance of a polishing calender while producing only minimal evaporation of water from the coated surface; and d) calendering the coated sheet of paper between the drum of a polishing calender having a heated finish surface and an elastic support cylinder.
